How to select my language in Earfy?

The Earfy app uses the general language of your device (smartphone or tablet). You can change the language of the Earfy app by changing the language setting of your device. We will soon enable this switch in the app settings menu.

Which speech-engine to use on a Samsung device?
  • You should disable the Samsung Speech to text engine and enable the Google engine, by following these steps:
  • Go to: Settings >> Language and input >> Text-to-speech options,
  • Change "Samsung text-to-speech, to: Google text-to-speech engine
How to solve that no text appears?
  • In case you use an external microphone: check if it is turned on and connected
  • Check your internet connection: Is WiFi turned on? If you want to use the app without WiFi, you should download a language file via the settings menu.
How to improve subtitle quality?
  • Set you device language to the language in which you want your subtitles to appear
  • Ask the speaker to articulate clearly and not to mumble
  • Ensure that you have a fast internet connecton: WiFi, 3G or 4G
  • Background noise influences the capturing quality: turn music and tv of or go to a more silent place
  • Make sure that people speak after each other (multiple voices at the same time disturb the text recognation)
  • Ask the speaker to speak close enough to the microphone (use an external mic if necessary)
How to improve the speed of my subtitles?
  • Check your internet connection and use WiFi, 3G or 4G for optimal result
  • Ask the speaker to take a break now and then
  • If you are using an old device, it might be due to the capacities of your device
What is the best Android device for Earfy?
  • We tried many setups and got the best results with devices that run on a basic Android version (not tweaked by the hardware producer and version 4.0 or higher)
  • We got best results on devices that do not have an Intel chipset.
Can I use an external microphone?
  • We got very good results using external microphones. These can be installed in a position close to the speaker, which leads to higher accuracy.
  • Make sure you use a microphone with the right type of connectors. Some microphones require an adaptor cable to be connected to a tablet or smartphone (even if they seem to fit)
What is the difference between online and offline?

Most Android device offer an option to download an offline dictionary via the Earfy menu. This offline version is less accurate but has the advantage that it can be used if ther is no internet connection available. If an internet connection is available we highly recommend using the online version since it is more accurate.

How to resolve "Access Restricted - Speech recognition is resticted on this device"?

This message is the result of a restriction setting on your device. You are able to resolve this in a few steps, as follows:

  • Go to “Settings" (of your device)
  • Select “Restrictions”
  • On top select “Enable Restrictions”
  • Scroll to “Privacy -> Speech Recognition”
  • Select “Allow Changes”
  • Scroll back to the top and “Disable Restrictions"
  • Now restart the Earfy app. You will be asked to grant permission to speech recognition. This Speech Recognition setting will also become available in the settings menu of the Earfy app.
